Views on Verecunda’s life

A Window into the Scottish Roman Past

Verecunda is an enslaved Caledonian girl who works at the Roman commander's house in one of the Antonine Wall forts, Bar Hill. You will also meet four other characters - her father Lossio, the Roman commander’s daughter Julia, the African cook Menna, and fellow Caledonian Corotica). They each share their own view of Verecunda and what she means to them. Listen to their stories and find out about the objects interwoven in them. Can you work out what has happened to the missing Verecunda?

These stories were developed for The Hunterian at the University of Glasgow, as part of the IDEA (Increasing Digital Engagement and Access) project funded by Museums and Galleries Scotland Development Fund (2021-23). It is developed from prototypes and ideas created during the EU-funded EMOTIVE research project (2016-19), which focused on the use of emotional storytelling to enhance visitors’ experience of cultural heritage. Through digital storytelling we offer another way of experiencing The Hunterian's collection from the Antonine Wall, the most northerly frontier of the Roman Empire. The story explores issues of identity, past and present, helping users connect with the objects through the story of the fictional character of Verecunda.
